It was early summer, and New York City’s streets were seeing a steady stream of Black Lives Matter protesters outraged by the murder of George Floyd. Twenty-six year old Kia Damon had only been living in Brooklyn for two years, having moved from Tallahassee, Florida for a swanky sous-chef job. The city was relatively new to her, but the anger coursing through its corridors was not. “Trayvon Martin happened right around the corner from me. I’m very much used to marching and protesting,” says Damon.
